E-News - A Special Holiday Message from Greg

A Special Holiday Message from Greg...

Two hundred thirty five years ago, on July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing the colonies' separation from Great Britain. The discontentment with Great Britain centered on unfair taxes levied by Parliament against colonial subjects that was used to pay for the defense of the colonies from the French and Indian Wars, which ended in 1763.

Britain was shouldered with an astronomical debt much like our US government today; however, the taxes owed today are even greater. Unfortunately, most responsibility to pay will fall on our kids and grand kids.

I'm reminded of what Ronald Reagan once said, "The 4th of July also commemorates the only true philosophical revolution in all history. Oh, there have been revolutions before and since ours. But those revolutions simply exchanged one set of rules for another. Ours was a revolution that changed the very concept of government. Let the Fourth of July always be a reminder that here in this land, for the first time, it was decided that man is born with certain God-given rights; that government is only a convenience created and managed by the people, with no powers of its own except those voluntarily granted to it by the people".

Every day thousands leave their homeland to come to the "land of the free and the home of the brave" so they can begin their American Dream. Yes, it does still exist. In spite of the economy, those that have the will to make it happen...make it happen! It's a time for fireworks, hot dogs and fun, but it's also a time to remember the men who signed the Declaration of Independence. They were the most idealistic and determined among the colonists, while the conservatives of their day believed that America should remain a colony of England forever. These liberal radicals believed in both individual liberty and societal obligations.

On this day, I encourage you to take a moment to remember their sacrifice that make it possible for all of us to live in a free country.

Have a great holiday!

Sincerely,
Greg McAfee
